What IS Scripture Writing?

Before I share with you how Scripture Writing works as a Bible study, let’s talk about what Scripture Writing is.

For thousands of years, writing out scripture was the only way God’s word was handed down.

Taking pen to paper – in whatever form that was for the time – to make a copy of God’s teachings. But preservation wasn’t the only purpose for the writing.

God told the kings to write out their own personal copy of the law in Deuteronomy 17:18-20. By doing this, they were creating a copy of God’s law they were to read and learn from every day to make them a proper king in God’s eyes.

Joshua wrote out a copy of the law on the stones of the altar after Israel won the battle of Ai (Josh. 8:32). This accomplished connecting what God had done for them at Ai with all that God had done before and would do in the future. Another way of improving the remembering of generations.

But isn’t Scripture Writing a little old-fashioned?

Copying out God’s word in our own hand is not out of date!

There are many studies that show how writing by hand helps us to remember what we’ve learned much better.

Muscle memory created when we write is not only in the muscles of our fingers, hands, and arms. Our brains simply remember better when there are more connections to the information that is being saved. Words that have pictures (reading), sounds (reading out-loud), and touch (writing) will stay with us much longer.

So if you are wanting to write God’s word “on the tablet of your heart” (Prov. 7:3), Scripture Writing is the PERFECT place to begin to do just that!

“Do not let kindness and truth leave you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart.”
Proverb 3:3 (NASB)
